“Future lab” is the first attempt for Play Design Hotel to invite three design artists to envision the possible future from their own perspective. The second artist, Kuang-Yi Ku, tries to open the discussion about animals’ right of sexuality and the relationship between human and animals by “Dolphin Eroticarium”, a marine park aiming to boost dolphins’ pleasure.

追尋真理的紮實＊情感表述的感性 A Sense of Solidity X Sensibility of Art
Kuang-Yi dropped out from medical school temporarily to do art creation, due to a lack of opportunities to look into the subjects which are interesting for him. At that time, his works mainly focused on expressing his own feelings. However, Kuang-Yi found this type of creation gives him a feeling that a piece of him is missing. Until he learned Bioart, which is a concept of using creatures as a medium through an artistic way of creation to express one’s feeling or challenge the existing social values, he gained back a sense of solidity. In order to expand the themes of his artworks and technique of expression, Kuang-Yi is now doing his MA Social Design in Design Academy Eindhoven, Netherland. Compare to Taiwan, the field of Bioart in Netherland is more mature and integrated.
“Dolphin Eroticarium” is inspired by a news of a film that a dolphin trainer used his hand to sexually stimulate a dolphin. Animal protectors suspect the trainer was abusing dolphins. But the aquarium responds the trainer was de-stressing dolphins. These arguments led Kuang-Yi start to think if animals have the same right of sexuality as human beings. In this context, the project designs a marine park to boost dolphin’s pleasure which is very different from the existing marine park model. In addition, the four areas in the park are designed according to different sexual activities in order to enrich dolphin’s sexual experiences.

The atmosphere of a hotel is quite suitable for introducing an amusement park. Not like the exhibitions in a gallery, a hotel allows audiences to experience these artworks which is very important for both the artworks and the designer. However, it is a difficult challenge to inspire audiences to dig into the topic precisely the designer wants to talk about. Kuang-Yi has been trying to find out what is the most appropriate technique of expression. Not like other designers’ products, “Dolphin Eroticarium” is about the imagination of future and the redesign of the social system, which makes it difficult to go into market directly. Hence, this time cooperating with Play Design Hotel offers a platform for the project to interact with audiences in a different way.

Either audiences or designers, everyone would have more feelings to those topics which are interesting to them. Kuang-Yi’s recent works are all related to sexuality, especially focusing on the sexual minority. The sexual minority used to be taboos in the past, alongside with the evolution of society, it arouses more and more discussion. This change is fascinating to Kuang-Yi. Hence, he uses different projects to evoke the discussion among the public and hopes through speculative design the society will have a new attitude towards sexuality.
