「未來實驗室」是玩味旅舍今年度一個全新的嘗試。以「思辨設計」為主軸，邀請了三位設計藝術家，以各自視角出發，遙想可能的未來。三位設計藝術家在「未來實驗室」擺放了三個有趣的計畫。其中，Paul（宮保睿）想像未來圍繞在生物多樣性及人的身體。「樹懶效應 No.1 , 腋下的雨林」啟發自樹懶毛髮上的微小生態系，其互利共生的關係，讓人不禁想像，人體的腋下是不是也有個充滿生命小宇宙？這次我們邀請藝術家 Paul 入住「未來實驗室」，與自己的作品對話，並和我們分享作品背後的概念及脈絡。
“Future lab”is the first attempt for Play Design Hotel to invite three design artists to envision the possible future from their own perspective. Hence, three interesting projects were introduced. The imagination of future by Paul Gong, one of the three artists we invited, is about biodiversity and human body.“Sloth Effect: NO. 1, The Rainforest of Axilla”was inspired by the micro-ecosystem on sloths’ body and its mutualistic relationship makes people start to wonder if there is a small universe in the axillary hair of human body. This time, we invited Paul to stay in 502-Future Lab to have a conversation with his own work, and share with us the concept behind it.

生物藝術的創作路 A Journey of Bioart
現在的 Paul 主要在大學裡任教、跟其他藝術家合作以及自己的創作。一直都對生物及科學很有興趣的 Paul，碩士就讀於英國皇家藝術學院設計互動系。在某一次生物相關的計畫中和科學家合作，也開始了他往後在生物藝術尚的創作路。生物藝術的主題雖然有趣，但對於非生物專業的設計師來說，仍需做很多功課、諮詢周遭不同背景的朋友、甚至主動寫信請教科學家，確保自己對議題有正確的認識及理解。大部分作品很難靠自己一人完成，但與不同人的反覆討論，能夠讓作品更有內涵及深度。
Paul Gong, who holds an MA in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London, United Kingdom, has been always interested in Biology and Science. In one project related to biology, he had an opportunity to work with scientists, through which he stepped on his journey of Bioart. Although Bioart is interesting, they are usually hard to understand. To ensure the precise understanding of the topic, it takes lots of time to do research, consult friends from different backgrounds and even ask scientists. While most of the artworks require lots of discussions, they achieve the higher completeness. Now, Paul’s job includes teaching in universities, co-create art projects with others and make his own artworks.
「樹懶效應No.1 , 腋下的雨林」 Sloth Effect : NO. 1, The Rainforest of Axilla
Paul 的作品大多圍繞著動物、人、自然與新興科技，並與社會上正發生的議題相呼應。Paul 認為作品的呈現除了趣味性外，更期望能引起大眾的思考與討論。這次「腋下的雨林」是想探討生物多樣性、人體及文化之間的關係。與之前的作品相較，Paul 近期的作品回到自身想關切的議題上，像是人體、社會文化、性別及美學呈現。
Paul’s works are all about animals, people, nature and new technology. At the same time, these works are reflecting the social issue happening now. Except for the playfulness, Paul also tries to stimulate people to think and to have discussions. This time, “The Rainforest of Axilla” attempts to discuss the relationship between biodiversity, human body, and culture. Compared to previous works, Paul's recent ones are more related to what he concerns, such as human body, social culture, gender and aesthetic.
對 Paul 來說，這次展覽地點在旅舍房內，是很有趣的嘗試。不同的空間會給觀眾及藝術家不同的感覺。旅舍的房間讓展覽更接近觀眾，也更貼近生活。這次 Paul 的作品強調生物多樣性，就很適合放在潮濕的浴室。然而，不像其他展覽，這次的作品呈現需要跟觀眾做很多細節的互動，所以作品的易讀性是很大的挑戰。從構思開始，要不斷的模擬排練，並預想觀眾的反應，讓整個互動流程更貼近想傳達的概念。同時，這個計畫也與織品設計師 Rachel 合作。從被這個意想不到的主題嚇到開始，在經過深度溝通後，Rachel 成功地把這個複雜的概念實體化成抱枕，讓觀眾能跟作品有不同形式的互動。
Aside from the concept behind this work, the exhibition space in Play Design Hotel is also very interesting. Different spaces give the audiences and artists different feelings. A room in a hotel is closer to audiences and their daily life. Like this time, “The Rainforest of Axilla” fits perfectly in the humid bathroom. However, unlike other exhibitions, this work requires lots of sophisticated interactions. Hence, Paul had rehearsed the interaction process and reaction of audiences, again and again, to ensure it meets what he tries to convey. At the same time, Paul also worked with the Fabric designer Rachel. After being shocked by this unexpected project and countless times of communication, Rachel successfully transforms the complicated concept into non-woven pillows which offer audiences an opportunity to interact with the exhibition in a different way.
In fact, Paul has never thought of living with his own works. In the interview, he kept saying “it is a very interesting experience.” In his stay, he paid attention to the experimental records leaving by previous visitors. These records allow the work to present in a more dynamic way. As we said about "Future Lab", when the visitors experience the artworks, they become a part of them. Furthermore, those feedbacks might become another project in the future, or this project may be extended to the hair of the whole body. Who knows?

充滿期待的嘗試 Attempts with Expectation
除了生物藝術外，Paul 參與的領域也十分多元：未來世界的設定、視覺實體化等都是 Paul 感興趣的範圍。創作概念通常都包含把平面變成立體，以及把主要作品元素拉出來實體化。像是為詹朴策劃的「織出奇幻與現實之間的那些篇章」展，就讓模特兒從書中走出來營造奇幻的氛圍，再把恐龍化石圖騰，拉出來呈現在展覽中。
Apart from Bioart, Paul also participates in diverse fields, such as future world, visualization, and embodiment. The creating concept often includes embodying the key elements of different projects and turning 2D objects into 3D. For example, the exhibition “Weaving The Chapters Between Fantasy and Reality “curated for ApuJan. Paul let models walk out from books to create a fantastic atmosphere and set out a dinosaur fossil installation which pattern appears a lot in ApuJan’s design.
Bioart and Speculative Design are relatively new in Taiwan. Therefore, Paul tries to inspire more people to get in touch with these topics through his artworks, workshops, and speeches to strengthen these two ecosystems. Meanwhile, we expect these two fields in Taiwan will become more mature in the near future.
